Clarifying roles, competence and responsibility in paddlesport delivery
Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) has published a comprehensive set of Standards for Deployment to support safer, more consistent delivery of paddlesport activity across the UK.
These standards apply to a wide range of roles, including committee members, volunteers, instructors, coaches, leaders, and those organising or supervising activities and events.
At the heart of the Standards for Deployment is the principle that anyone supporting paddlesport activity must be appropriately trained, qualified, checked and competent for the role they are undertaking. The framework recognises that paddlesport delivery relies on a mix of paid staff and volunteers, and seeks to provide clarity about what is required in each context to create a safer culture for participants and providers alike.
For organisations operating commercially, Paddle UK has produced a dedicated Standards for Deployment Policy for Commercial Providers, setting out minimum expectations around qualifications, first aid, safeguarding, insurance and experience. These standards are supported by additional guidance documents, including a glossary and useful links, designed to help providers interpret terminology and apply the requirements consistently.
The standards do not replace existing legal duties or site‑specific risk management, but they do establish a clear benchmark for good practice. For instructors, leaders and coaches, there is a strong emphasis on working within the remit of qualifications held, maintaining ongoing competence, and ensuring that deployment decisions are proportionate to the environment, craft and activity being delivered.
For activity providers and managers, understanding and applying the Paddle UK Standards for Deployment is an important part of demonstrating due diligence, supporting staff effectively, and aligning operational practice with nationally recognised expectations.
