Auto belay safety guidance

Managing risk through good practice

Key guidance from the Association of British Climbing Walls

The Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) has published a comprehensive set of safety guidelines for the use of auto‑belay devices, developed in collaboration with partners in the UK and internationally. The guidance responds to a growing number of serious accidents linked to auto‑belay use, many of which have occurred not through equipment failure, but as a result of human error.

The ABC guidance highlights a recurring theme: experienced climbers are not immune to mistakes. A significant proportion of reported incidents involved climbers forgetting to clip in, often at the end of a session or when distracted. As a result, the guidance focuses on risk reduction strategies that address complacency and reinforce consistent, safe behaviours.

Key recommendations include the introduction of a specific auto‑belay competency assessment, even for climbers who are already assessed as roped‑climbing competent. This assessment is intended to confirm understanding of the unique hazards associated with auto‑belay systems and should be documented as part of a centre’s safety management system. For those who are not roped‑climbing competent, a formal auto‑belay induction is recommended, delivered in person by a suitably trained and competent staff member.

The guidance also emphasises the importance of clear messaging, visual prompts and consistent operational procedures to support safe use. Supporting materials, including a picture‑based auto‑belay test, are provided to help walls reinforce correct behaviours and reduce reliance on assumption or memory.

For climbing wall operators, the ABC auto‑belay guidance provides a clear and practical framework that supports safer operations, better staff deployment, and reduced risk of preventable incidents.
