The UK Met Office in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is predicting periods of exceptionally hot weather over the next few days.
The warnings include areas of the UK where adventure activities are delivered from centres, temporary camps and during walking, cycling and paddlesport expeditions.
In some cases, such weather may dictate the cancellation of activities, in others a careful assessment of the risks could allow for the identification and implementation of additional control measures and mitigations.
We are aware of providers taking the following steps to help manage these risks:
- Amending their daily schedule with activity starting earlier, pausing during the hottest part of the day and resuming later
- Programme changes to coordinate the delivery of specific activities at certain times within the day (some activities provide shade, allow for breaks and other interventions more readily than others)
- Providing drinks, snacks and shade breaks
- Reminding instructors of the symptoms of heat related illness and the early actions which might avoid a full-blown incident
- Wide brimmed hats and soaked tube scarfs as aids to cooling
- Revised route plans to increase options for shade, allow for reduced pace, increase checking-in opportunities, and to replenish fluids
- Consideration of cold-water shock and other related hazards of tempting bodies of water

Extreme periods of hot, windy and wet weather are becoming less exceptional and more extreme. Whilst we can’t always predict when they will occur in our areas, we can be increasingly confident that they will occur – so we can and should be planning for them.
