The UK Ropes Course and Off‑Ground Adventure Activities Guide

What operators need to know

The UK Ropes Course and Off‑Ground Adventure Activities Guide (2021) is the key industry guidance document for anyone involved in the design, construction, inspection, maintenance or operation of ropes courses and similar off‑ground adventure activities in the UK. Produced by the Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee (AAIAC) in collaboration with the European Ropes Course Association (ERCA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it reflects current accepted good practice across the sector.

The updated guide supports operators in understanding how to comply with European Standard EN 15567, which sets minimum requirements for both construction and operation of ropes courses, zip lines, adventure parks, net parks and simulated freefall devices. While EN 15567 is not law, it is widely recognised by enforcing authorities as an important benchmark against which safety standards may be assessed.

Covering everything from supervision levels and safety systems to inspections, instructor competence and emergency planning, the guidance recognises that ropes courses are inherently adventurous activities. Rather than trying to eliminate risk entirely, it focuses on managing risk proportionately through good design, competent staff, clear procedures and robust inspection regimes.

The document is relevant to both developmental and recreational (“pay‑to‑play”) settings and emphasises the shared responsibility for safety between operators and participants. Although not a substitute for legislation or the full EN standards, the guide is regarded as essential reading for any organisation delivering off‑ground adventure activities safely and professionally in the UK.
