John has built a distinguished career in the outdoors, transforming an early passion into more than 30 years of professional experience. He has served as an instructor, technical adviser, and qualification course provider across leading outdoor centres in the UK and France, alongside freelance instructing in both the UK and New Zealand.
Currently, he heads a local authority outdoor activities department, where he remains actively involved in leading and instructing in mountain and river environments, delivering Mountain Training walking awards, and maintaining the highest standards of professional practice. John holds senior, nationally recognised qualifications in Mountainsports and Paddlesports, complemented by a wide range of awards spanning several outdoor disciplines.
John lives in central Scotland with his wife and three children. In addition to his professional achievements, he has volunteered with Scottish Mountain Rescue for many years and has previously served as a director of Mountain Training Scotland, reflecting a longstanding commitment to leadership, safety, and excellence within the outdoor sector.
