Carl discovered rock climbing and mountaineering in the late eighties and early nineties, quickly realising that these pursuits—and later white‑water kayaking—could be combined with his long‑standing passion for travel. He has now spent more than thirty years working in the outdoor adventure industry.
He holds the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI) award, is a Mountain Training course director, and is qualified as a white‑water kayak and surf coach and leader.
Carl is also a Swift Water Rescue Technician and holds a BA (Hons) in Education & Training, a Certificate in Education, and Diploma‑level qualifications in Sport Science and Sport Psychology.
Alongside his work with Adventure RMS, Carl leads expeditions, delivers instructor training and assessment courses, and provides technical expertise and film safety support in adventure environments. His personal travels have taken him around the world, with climbing and mountaineering adventures in the Alps, Spain, Africa, the USA and Asia. He has also kayaked extensively both in the UK and overseas.
