John Hamilton

Inspector

John is a level 5 Inland kayak coach, level 4 Open canoe coach and level 3 Sea and Surf coach. He is also a Scottish mountain bike leader tutor/assessor and holds a BASI Nordic award. He has trained and assessed many instructors for nationally recognised awards.

His interest in the outdoors started from his school days and at age 12 completed his first 3 day expedition and three Munros in the Arrochar Alps. He has subsequently worked in the outdoor industry as a voluntary instructor and instructed and managed commercial centres before becoming a local authority Head of Service for outdoor education and learning.

During a 30 year career in the outdoor industry he has chaired the Scottish Canoe Association coaching committee, the Scottish Advisory Panel for Outdoor Education and the Scottish Adventure Activities Forum. He was also a member of the Scottish Government’s Outdoor Learning and Strategic Advisory group.

John was the volunteer head coach for the Scottish Special Olympics team for several years and has lead trips in Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Poland and China. His favourite passion is travelling anywhere in the remote outdoors by foot, ski, bike or boat. His guilty pleasure is snow-holing!
